Phelps Lake ~ Grand Teton National Park

Phelps Lake ~ Grand Teton National Park: looking down from the overlook. The Phelps Lake Overlook trail is not an overly challenging hike, roughly two miles out and back from the Death Canyon Trailhead. However, I will say that getting there is part of the adventure. We entered Grand Teton National Park from the Granite Canyon entrance, north of Teton Village. We traveled along Moose Wilson Road before making a left onto Whitegrass Ranch Road. As mentioned, this is where the adventure begins. A sign recommends traveling the road in a high clearance 4-wheel drive vehicle, which we have but many others did not. The road is rocky, rutted and chalked full of deep potholes. We bounced along for roughly a mile-and-a-half before finding a suitable parking spot, leaving us about 1/10 of a mile to walk to the trailhead. One could carefully navigate this road in dry conditions in a car, and we witnessed several making the effort, but I would think twice in rainy/snowy conditions.
