Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is one of the least visited National Parks; however, if you are in the neighborhood it is worthy of a visit. Known as steep, deep and narrow, the Gunnison River has carved it way through the volcanic rock to reach metamorphic rock below, creating the canyon as we see it today. The exposed rock of the canyon dates back more than one billion years, the Pegmatite, which is the lighter colored rock as seen in the photo and is predominant throughout the Black Canyon of the Gunnison.
